This time last week I was trying to assemble a kitchen cabinet. After several wasted hours I should have just spent the extra money and use this time more productively.

Orlando, Before Mickey
I grew up in Orlando, and some of it was before Mickey Mouse moved into town. Boy, has it ever change a lot! I last lived their in the late 1980′s, and when I go back to visit, I hardly recognize it. From the sleepy Central Florida town I was raised in, it’s become one of the premier vacation spots in the world!
What was it like, pre-Disney, up through the time when there was just the Magic Kingdom (and none of the other parks)? Very different from today!
Orlando in the 1960s
It’s funny, but Orlando was not one of the places you wanted to be in Florida. The summers are fiercely hot and humid, and the winters are chilly (by Florida standards, at any rate). Air conditioning is absolutely necessary for comfort, but back then, A/C wasn’t everywhere. Especially cars, because we rode with the windows open.
I remember the trials and tribulations of the “love bugs” that came seasonally — there were a few years where they were like a black fog – ewww! You didn’t want to go outside. And speaking of bugs, the mosquitoes were everywhere. Screened doors and windows were a necessity. And Orlando vacation villas and homes? People would have laughed you out of town!
Orlando in the 1970s
After Mickey Mouse came to live here, things started changing, and Orlando started its boom. Jobs sprung up, apartments and homes were built, and the city started looking more like a city than a one-horse town.
A nearby town (sometimes knows to Orlando-ites as a “cow town”) was Kissimmee, and it started growing. What used to only be know for its rodeo was fast becoming a base for hotels courting the Disney vacation crowd. Ten years earlier, who’d have thought it could be so!
Where I lived in West Orlando, a lot of the kids from my high school worked at Disney World (including me). It was one of the best employers in the area, especially with the high school and college crowd.
Still, Orlando still had more of a small-town atmosphere even in the 70s, rather than the city it’s become today. What’s in store for the future? Only time can tell.
